Following the success of the first BIFIMP conference in 2009 which attracted
participants from more than 10 Asian, Middle-East, African and European
countries, Kasetsart International MBA Program and Department of Management,
Faculty of Business Administration, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand are
jointly hosting the 2nd Bangkok International Forum on Indigenous Management
Practices, commencing August, 28th –31st, 2011 at Kasetsart University in
Bangkok, Thailand. The concept of Indigenous management has arisen in contrast
to the Western and especially American ideas on business and management which
are often held to be universally applicable, but which are often met with
skepticism in less developed and emerging economies. The increasingly scholarly
interest in indigenous management reflects the important conviction that
management as a practice takes many forms and that many defining facets are
simply not accommodated in Western schemes and models. The goal of this timely
forum is to provide a lively and informal venue where a variety of questions
and ideas regarding Indigenous management can be presented and discussed by
academics and other professionals in an interdisciplinary and creative
environment.
The conference will focus on the following issues:-
- Practical problems experienced by developing countries in applying western management
theories
- Business model and management practice approach developed from local wisdom,
values, and norms
- ‘Glocal’ approaches in business operations
- Spirituality at work
- Influences of local values and belief such as cultural mythology, proverbs,
metaphors and religion on business/management practices
We invite for submission interesting papers that employ novel, indigenously sensitive or interdisciplinary approaches that reflect the views of those active in areas including the social sciences, arts or humanities. The deadline for papers is July 31th, 2011. Submissions should include author's full name, affiliations, mailing address, telephone/fax numbers and e-mail address. Papers are expected to be in PDF format (APA style) and should be no longer than 5000 words excluding diagrams, tables and other attachments. Please send your submission by email to Nirundon Tapachai (ntapachai@yahoo.com)
A special issue of Cambridge
Scholar Publishing has been negotiated. Discussions with other journals with
regard to special issues are in progress. The organisers would welcome
suggestions and recommendations regarding special issues related to the forum.

Professor Nigel Holden, Visiting Research Fellow, Centre for International Business at the
University of Leeds, UK, Visiting Professor, Kasetsart
University, and Co-founder & Associate Editor of the European Journal of
International Management.
Topic
: “Why indigenous management needs to be taken seriously by everyone
in management education”
Nigel Holden retired from full-time academic life in December 2010, having been
professor of cross-cultural management at business schools in the UK, Germany
and Denmark. As of 1 May 2011 he joined the Centre for International
Business at Leeds University Business School as a Visiting Research Fellow. He
is also a Visiting Professor at KIMBA.
He has co-authored management
books on Japan (1994) and Russia (1998), and his acclaimed Cross-cultural management: A knowledge management perspective
(2002) has appeared in Chinese and Russian versions. His latest book,
co-authored with Martin Glisby, is Creating knowledge advantage: the tacit dimensions of international
competition and cooperation.
In 2008 he was described by the
International Journal of Cross Cultural
Management as having ‘influenced a generation of scholars in Europe and
North America with his work on knowledge management, and perhaps his
alternative approach to the well-trodden paths of cross-national values research.’
Professor Vuthiphong Priebjrivat, Visiting Professor, Kasetsart University,
Thailand
Topic : Business Management: The Buddhist Way
Woody Prieb, or formally Dr. Vuthiphong
Priebjrivat, is a rare combination of corporate, academic and religious accomplishments.
Woody, as affectionately nick-named by his American friends and colleagues, is
currently president of a nonprofit research institute. He was the founding
president of Thailand’s first credit rating agency, Thai
Rating and Information Services (TRIS). He earlier served as vice president for
corporate planning at Bangkok Bank, Thailand’s largest commercial bank.
During his academic career, Woody taught at
Thailand’s prestigious Thammasat University and was a visiting professor in
America at the University of North Carolina. He has written extensively for
academic and professional journals on topics covering economics, finance,
business and public policy. His popular writings however largely concern
politics and government and include a best-selling political satire titled “Corruptology: How to Loot the People in Four Easy Lessons”.
A while ago, Woody spent some time as a
Buddhist monk. He has since extensively studied various metaphysical and
religious thoughts and views, particularly those of eastern origin. This
intellectual cum spiritual pursuit results in a seminal book titled
“Dharmodynamics”, which is a fusion of modern science and the age-old wisdom of
eastern religions. He occasionally gives lectures to monks at both
Mahachulalongkorn and Mahamakut Buddhist Universities in Bangkok.
After having ranked first in Thailand’s
National Examination, Woody was awarded the King’s Scholarship to further his
education in the United States. He received a B.S. in civil engineering from
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); an M.S. in environmental
engineering from Stanford University; and an M.B.A. and a Ph.D. in economics
and public management from the University of Chicago. He has received numerous
other awards including a Rockefeller Scholarship, a Citibank International
Fellowship and a Fulbright Award.
